У цій книжці на основі багатого джерельного матеріалу Леонід Ушкалов подає біографію українського публіциста, науковця та громадського діяча Михайла Драгоманова (1841–1895). Автор символічно поділив життєпис на п’ятдесят чотири параграфи й спробував, за його ж словами, «наскільки це можливо, показати життя Драгоманова не чорно-білим, а барвистим, таким, яким наше життя є насправді». «Без гніву і пристрасті» він оповідає про повсякдення свого героя і пробує проникнути у світ його ідей. Yevhen Sverstiuk – Valeria Andrievska: Correspondence (2 vols., 3 books)

The book contains the correspondence between Yevhen Sverstiuk and his wife Valeria Andrievska. Yevhen Sverstiuk (1928–2014) was a Ukrainian literary critic, essayist, and one of the leading figures of the dissident movement in Soviet Ukraine in the 1960s. Valeria Andrievska (born 1938) is a psycholinguist and fellow at the Institute of Psychology of Ukraine’s National Academy of Educational Sciences. For twelve years, their letters circulated between him in Soviet political prison camps and forced exile and her in Kyiv. Together they create a detailed picture of the addressees’ daily and aesthetic experiences, and also convey the social spirit of the time.

The definitive features of the correspondence are its authors’ unique ability to go beyond life circumstances and their maintaining of true, non-momentary values. Full of light and psychologically balanced, the letters served as inner support, a protective shield, and a way of creative realization and life-giving communication between the mentally related people. The book explores the efforts made by the Studite Statute monks of the Lviv Archdiocese of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to save the Jews during the Holocaust. The author answers various issues related to their sheltering. He analyzes the motivations, methods, and risks of the rescuers and the rescued alike, and also debunks myths developed due to the previous researchers’ insufficient awareness of local conditions and rescuers’ capabilities. The study restores the historical truth and develops a comprehensive vision of the Studites’ rescue action, which was launched by their Archimandrite, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, and saved lives of several hundred adults and children.
